Rachel Carter
Public art Sculpture
An artist who likes to push the boundaries
in relation to the material, the research, the ideas and the space for her art. A highly ambitious artist she has taken chances but always been aware of needing to make money.
The RHS sculptures showed her pushing her work in a not so typical space for her type of work however, she was could see something in a space and envision something that made her a living doing what she loved. She has a great sense of seeing an opportunity and taking a risk on herself and the project. A sole trader artist Rachel Carter began her journey studying A level Art and Foundation at South Notts College moving on to Derby University where she found a great support network achieving 2.1 with two children and a husband. The degree she achieved was applied arts which can include decorative design, graphic design and fashion.
The work that Rachel does takes the artistry and skill of weaving textiles and manipulating the material and develops it in other practices. This is something I do, for example, I take paper acetate and sew it into it to build up texture. As I guide the needle through the paper taking one thing, such as textiles and taking into another medium. Recently, I went to a weaving workshop. This was something I have never done before however, as soon as I found my feet using thread and wool weaving I began to add wire questioning how I can make it more 3D, pushing it using wire and sticks . It is clear from Rachel's work she has taken the discipline of textiles and the language of textiles into metal sculpture .
