artist write up

LUCY NELSON  is an artist who started in the performing arts  with a passion for drama,  studying this as an A level along with English Literature with a desire to go Drama school as she had won multiple awards for drama . When talking to one of her lecturers they said that she should study fine art  and she so went on to Stafforshire University in 2002

Starting off as a painter,  creating photo realistic style she

embellished surfaces working with various materials .

When working with materials, she likes to go into all aspects of the material she is utilising, this could be how it works or where it is made . At University she felt as if it was very selective with the direction of some students leading those to success and held back with encouraging the rest . This led to Lucy leaving her studies . She came to the conclusion to make life happen with her own actions going down the road of theatre makeup and community theatre. Whilst running workshops she discovered that she enjoyed helping teaching others .

Lucy moving to Nottingham to study for a Masters and on completion she worked supporting people with Autism. Lucy also taught at South Notts College for seventeen years which funded her ability to produce art. She has been offered a residency and run discovery workshops helping people with self-discovery through art.

Her advice was to build up a portfolio slowly and take all opportunities to develop yourself.

Artist Research

Last year i began to seek various events and workshops

seek various workshops and talks and exhibitions to help me towards my critical thinking

Helping enable me to embody the work approach of an artist  with in this time below this piece of writing is information about workshops and other events I sought out . Looking on Eventbrite I found it very helpful as an artist finding all of the following. And I will continue to use this as place to source out art events and opportunities to develop me further as an artist .

Honey Williams ART Performance

ON the 12th of March I went to the New Art Exchange for a live exhibition by artist Honey Williams who is a Nottingham based artist. This was a multidisciplined art piece with live painting and singing with displayed painting within the space. Also this art piece was about Honey as a large lady or, as she said, fat, sharing her experience. However, it appeared she was taking the power back within this performance because her paintings were self-portraits that had, a warm expressive, sensual look about them striking you in a space that I describe as a mother’s womb, a beautiful nest, a homely place, some kind of shrine. I felt the honesty in her words and the belief in her words of how others have perceived her as a person from what is expressed

With music production and live vocals and her walking round with a crown that resembled a head pieces from a carnival, her costume projected royalty and strength, empowerment.

What I take from this, as I also like delivering multilayers in my work was her way of really setting the scene for the audience who were all sat in a circle. The lighting was dimmed images displayed in a certain way which pulled us all into her world via the performances and the setting .

Formatt  Derby cultural Evolution

When thinking about getting my ancestry DNA done,

I began looking at African art mask sculpture. However, I felt this to be an okay but obvious place to look. I thought about how the DNA could inform the work.  Looking for an exhibition  in relation to African art I found this exhibition, and I was able to have talks with the some of the artist curators and resident artist who had been there since November along with some workers that where part of Formatt.

I went with the intention to look at the work and I found myself talking to artists, making connections, learning about Formatt that week I saw there was a role for social media

Talking to the artists was something I enjoyed. I did this and found my flow I would like to explore this avenue further being more thought out although I think I did well . Thinking to do a podcast

WEAVING WORKSHOP Derby by Seiko Kinoshit

As I knew I was wanting to look at my DNA ANCESTRY I began think about this and how I could represent DNA. I choose to explore weaving as this fabric and the building of textures through material was something I was really wanting to do. I arrived at the weaving workshop and was given 2 weaving boards that were made at the workshop by an engineer who worked in a Derbyshire museum. We were taught by the artist Sakeo who showed us various techniques.

I took them on and was able to take them into a more 3d dimension

I was happy with the results and after the workshop

I had manged to do the weaving and bring and mix

Other materials      than the

met a weaving artist who had a residency within the building

Her name was ?????????

Silvercity Celine Condorelli and Hannah Cathrine Jones

9th April  Nottingham CONTEMPORARY

These two artist’s works contributed towards Our SilverCity.

They had a conversation about the work and the room .

The work featured I could describe as a sensory experience for me with Celine's prints on fabric and Hannah’s sonic work this was indeed a great celebration. The room their work was in truly highlighted a sensitivity that is within in me that responds to a sensory experience.  I take so much from this as there is a love as an artist to work with a multitude of materials and sound developing further to pull you in to something to feel.

After the talk I went to talk to the artist further and headed out for a drink with the curator at Nottingham Contemporary and both artists. Takeing the contact details of one of the artist wanting to build conections

Web design workshop April 7th

This was presented by two women DEBBIEDOODAH and

 Hana Glover

both experts on web design.

Within this workshop I was learning about the best websites to use and ways to connect with my audience and why it is better to do it myself rather than have a web designer for example have to change things or add things like new items ect this could add extra cost  as I have control in a fast moving market where the price for alterations can be high.

Being consistent with posting is essential and with google its free to list your business.

Mishka Henner artist talk  April 6th

An artist who looks at things from a sky view, Mishka started as a photographer  talks about images onces out on the internet how surrender our ownership . From this thought he began to hate the idea of photography he then ventured into

collecting google satellite images of feedlots images that look above where cows are kept for slaughter.

I found these images echoed a look of klimit .And connect it through to my work . Using the land at and eyelevel it is what know to be a feedlot

And also linking to my current project the land and the moving of life from a satellite perspective

Takeing something such as satalite images that something

That we use to look down on the world to then take an image from this has a certain tone colour that  remsembes KLIMT it’s the flatness and the textural colours .

Nottingham Contemporary live art discussion 21st April

A discussion that looked at art and  engaged audiences once again a moment such as covid when people gathered on zoom for things such as poetry. Suggestions being made such as for the listeners to have the words, does this alter the art of delivery and paying attention to poetry being delivered?

Exhibition launch Contemporary

I attended the exhibition at the Nottingham Contemporary and I wanted to take it in, however, I found this difficult with the film lasting for 30 minutes. There was one room that was an interactive art piece with slides rotating round and other things and two rooms with films. I did not know what to expect for this exhibition and I did not stay long. I will return when it is quiet to take it in and really look. I went to the launch party that followed that involved live music and this was great atmosphere

thinking about people being stuck outside myself

In the proess of doing painting i began to look at my little wire sculpture thinking to bring a more human
looking at these ideas through faces .With the use of fineliner and seeing faces on YouTube and magazines I see brief elements of the face and draw them . What could I ask myself ? Make these images translucent accitate with potontial colours going into a deeper space . For the marks of the fineliner are subtle dramatic the faces feel like they carry a story nobody know what goes on within a mind of another.

Suzann Golden

Suzann Golden is the co-director at Backlit Art Studios in Nottingham City with Samuel Morley.

Growing up in Mersey side she studied at St Helens College and at the age of 17  received the opportunity to work with British artist Antony Gormley  working on an art project in relation to gnomes . Being at St Helens opened a world of opportunities such as student to Munich but due to anxiety she cancelled this.

Her following place for education was Leeds Metropolitan University specialising in illustration from 1994 -1997. However, she did not  fully enjoy the course but enjoyed finding independence.

Suzann expresses how her life experiences inform her work at uni working on a  project in relation to rebellious Teddy boys and leaving having a studio for a short while .

She worked in a call centre but left the job making  big decisions to move to London after doing other jobs she applied for a job via the Guardian and then worked at Sotherbys Institute of Art Collecting Contemporary Art October – December 2001

The experience of working for an  established auction house was valuable together with that of working for the Arts Council in giving insight into the wealthy world of Art and funding of art.

The travelling she did to Malaysia, South America and the Middle East influenced her work but also gave her life experiences to draw on. Her message was to grab every opportunity.

My last position before moving to Nottingham was at Hayward Gallery London. Taking the leap was an exciting but risky one that paid off with Suzann landing the job at Backlit Nottingham working in a historical

That was once owned by Samuel Morley adding to the history of threading the moves throughout Nottingham . There are multiple  artists working on their practice at Backlit Studios.  applications to join the space as an artist . With volunteering enables you accesses

Georgia Fry

Georgia Fry is an artist who originally from Nottingham, was partly raised in Spain, living in a small village where there was not much traffic; two buses a day would run through the village.

So, a very simple life different from living in a city such as Nottingham or London. Feeling like life was uninspiring,

she went to a school, then left to go an art school which she found enjoyable and inspiring. It was also a struggle as the work depended on a more academic approach bringing more history of Spain into the work.

Moving back to Nottingham at the age of 18 felt like a huge journey together with returning to education studying for a Foundation degree.

Bringing her living background into her work with a liking for using various mediums such as digital art, photography, material and sublimation print  Georgia works intuitively .

Georgia fry       The gypsy in distant land

Her works mixes the culture and tradition of Spain and the religious imagery that is prevalent in traditional art ,along with the waves and fluidity of life and the issues she has experienced such as with her mental health. Through this way of working she is open to letting the work speak rather than coming up with an entire structured idea, playfulness is important to her and using reflection for inspiration. Her openness about her mental health issues made her aware of the importance of seeking help and using the feelings and experience to drive her ideas.

Although she has done corporate work with sponsorship from Speedo, she currently has a studio at Surface Gallery and is also studying to be a handiworker which will enable her to potentially work and also keep her art going as sometimes the art does not make money.

Diana Ali is a visual Artist & Curator TV Present

An artist with an incredible drive to develop, learn and grow, and to push boundaries and challenging herself

As an artist she has a greatly positive mindset ceasing every moment, turning ordinary experiences and connections into extraordinary opportunities for moving forward.

Beginning her journey at Nottingham Trent University, in the year 1999 and achieving a BA in the 2001, she finished her degree with a feeling of unsureness, not knowing what direction to go.

She got a job as a waitress but still continuing her practice, taking her sketch book to work and working on art pieces on a low budget finding spices in a cupboard to create art work for a show titled ‘Spiced ‘ in 2001 . She had the opportunity of curating an exhibitions within the space in the restaurant.

The next direction in her journey was teaching art in Ilkeston  as a teaching  qualification was not required t in 2003, leaping towards  another opportunity to develop further as an artist .

Her message was to take every opportunity to develop as an artist as a person. This resonated with me as I am researching a variety of aspects of work within art both artistically and professionally. Working in the community, with older adults, young people and joint projects with other artists. Diana spoke about building a database of contacts to reach out to for collaboration or opportunities to promote her work. Her beliefs in the value of art led her to become involved in groups  such as the Women Centre in Hyson Green and lobby Parliamentary groups. Becoming a figure within art she had opportunities offered such as The Big Painting Challenge on television.

Her Bangladeshi heritage is important in her work alongside her British upbringing. Spice uses spices from her heritage which were in the kitchen cupboard and draws on her heritage and Manchester, her birth place, fusing this into her work. Throughout her art career she is able to see an object or a moment, materials and to create whether it be traditional or non-traditional. Spice plays on the human senses with the smell drawing you in. This relates to my work where I wish to draw you in through your senses utilising textiles and my interest in the human experience.

Fabric printing episode 2 final major project 2023

The images I  chose for this print were images from my trip to Tokyo. In my process of working I know I am looking at the culture of Japan. Thinking about this contrast of old and new, I print on the fabric it is what I know, it has me immersed in the process with my hands. Then I may see differently through touch I am drawn into a world unknown that always had me curious photographing the shadows and the colours.

Jurney of the mind exhibition 23RD JANUARY

When initially looking at the work, I was put off by there being so much text. I find it difficult to find that place to engage with.  I forced myself to be still with it. The work felt like I had to do work, where I had to use my head. From my perspective, it felt religious and meditative, the images and historical pieces of text were essentially about leading you to a place of peace and stillness. Although it is not something that I would initially take from it. However, when looking at this sense of the world and people appearing to be on fragile ground this feels like a space that is something that is potentially wanted.  Something minimal and traditional such as text to hold us. I came away thinking about how a book pulls you into a place.

You have to engage with that part of yourself. After my response to the pieces of work all around the New Art Exchange.  I wanted to know where the writing came from, I looked and it turned out it was Sikh.
How did I feel about that? I thought it to be interesting that this religious or spiritual piece of work was being brought into a space where these days I am unaware of religious art being exhibited within a modern space and held in its belief.

I would say deconstructed religious art is more of a modern thing. The title was 'Journey of the Mind' My head led me to believe it was about potential mental health. So the title was misleading. And somehow sat with the world and the multiple conversations about mental health.
There wasn't an artist who was at the opening, but there was a collective of workers within the space. I wanted to find the artist as wanted to know what it was about, although it kind of felt clear the work felt community-based with multiple people working in front and behind the scene. Was this art or a community sharing the beliefs or both. Either way, it felt like something of religious art from a time past brought into a space of today.

final major project sketch book colour me free 2023

I arrive at College feeling not so good. Continuing thoughts about making a book. I decide to paint.

While painting I am finding myself in a flow state, listening to Ross from friends and Fred Again. This music is electronic dance music. Music that has me move I love to dance it takes me out of my head and out to the stars.

I find myself engrossed with the paint the ink the paper the brush as I have my headphones on it's clear that this is where I need to be once in flow I continue painting and inking the paper.

This process has me think about a process I have done before, responding to the sound response to painting the communication meditation through looping and painting.

I am not sure what I am wanting to achieve sometimes, the answers are not present as yet. I am simply painting and losing myself in this and music.

The headphones I wear are noise-cancelling they make me feel hugged in my own world. I wish to explore alone I am not desiring to connect to people around me. I am not feeling myself, although the colours expressed appear to be uplifting. These feel like expressions of stuck. And a reach for hope while going in circles with myself. Venturing through painting with fewer sounds around me enables me to really focus in on this moment with the colours that stroke my internal feeling.

From the paints I painted, I began to think of the title colour me free. I began to think about the exhibition I attended at The New Art Exchange titled 'Journey Of The Mind' This was an exhibition that I did not first feel I liked. The reason was that it felt like work
a process of more work having to read more than the regular exhibition. I with pieces of text on the walls I began to fall into place within the space the work was demanding my attention in a way that called upon the human to be still. This had me think of meditation slowing down the human rushing and not taking a moment.  What if I could create something that could hold you in a moment.  With the use of colour fabric and text. The nature of a book is centric, you need to focus to inhale what is in it the turning of the pages. A title of a book can pull you in also. I have many books at home although I struggle to have things stick with me. But books have a homely feel so this appeals.
