Beeston film festival 2024

Attending the Beeston Film Festival for research gave me insight into what was possible with short films. I have not been to a film festival before this was very helpful as for development into the future with my work and what is possble  within the direction of my artistry.  Two of the films that stood out were Marie and Everything is Out to Get Me. The use of sound within both films I found to be interesting and it is something I have taken into my work thinking about the environment. The pace of the film and the scenery and want to develop more knowledge with this

ARTIST RESEARCH Moby

 Moby is an artist who works with guitar and voice and contrasts with sampling and electronic sounds weaving these worlds and creating a meloncoly-like wonder. With an honest tone he is very good at picking out samples the character, the voice, the vocals. They tell a story and you feel the pain, a world unknown that leaves you wondering as dances with a modern sound touch the heart.With my love of sound however, when trying to create a character I want to sound like another world, another time,  a feeling of then, not now, or a questioning of where with the minimal black and white video

A slumpy track moving towards something  yet hopeless and hopeful with a painful soulful vocal 

ending of life with an angel presented in the form an actress known for horror alternative moves.

A child like an escape and wonder the innocent yet mature pain travelling yet stuck in this sound yet the video continues its innocence with this underlying sadness.

Portishead are a band  from the UK Known for the Triphop arty cinematic sound from the 90s.

When watching the video there is a distressing

disorder that feels other worldly, yet current. This is also produced through the delivery of vocals that are performed in a way that has you wondering.  The percussion has a DIY rawness along with the continuous organ sound and the dramatic piano and distorted brass instrument. This cinematic ambiguity mystery is traditional and still present

and I take this into my work .

 

Roy Nachum artist research

 

Roy Nachum is an artist that is from Israel playing with ideas in relation to sight and blindness working  in braille. Within this minimal coloured painting that appears to have a muteness and the potential to be interpreted as a sadness. With the colour there is the braille touch sensory communication and the balloon that is black. Is this playing on a perception of blindness. And then there is a crown that is not traditionally sat in a place for the eyes to see or to be seen

Looking at the image below that is slightly blurred with Braille, the muted black and white scenery with the focal point of the crown with braille on the crown. In the imagery in a space that resembles 

the beach. Black and white is classic 

Earth 2019 Roy Nachum

Distorted yet clear to the viewer the crown covers the eyes again there is a focus on the gold over the eyes with braille that communicates strength. To a person who does not read braille, this is a world seen yet hidden in a braille that not everyone understands unique or alone? In an endless distant world that is black and white.

Artist research ADÉBAYO BOLAJI

An artist from West London with a background in performance and acting, his work has mark-making that is free colourful and expressive.  I take this into my work in search of inspiration.I went to look at his exhibition in praise of beauty with lots of paintings all around.

Watching the video seeking inspiration the performance was loud in colour yet minimal striking a balance with communication through written words sound body movement, and weaving with sound. This is something I take into this stage of the project wanting to deliver clarity a fragile yet openness. 

 

DNA SOUND

 Thinking about music and rooted feelings, I was going through images that I created outside of this project, building up repetitive images of myself. I looked thinking about DNA, thinking about songs wedged into us .I was seeing DNA songs becoming a part of us. Although this first image is an old image that I have worked, the image plays on this resemblance of DNA familiarity, a knowing that is within, inherently in one's veins metaphorically melody, rhythm, repetition. Bringing something forth, reinjecting sampling, yet there are some parts that stay the same. I began exploring further. I had partly explored this before  image 2 was from part 1 . IT was a repetitive self portrait slowly distorting. I began to see a barcode this is a communication sound

church morning walking exploration March

IN March I decided to go for an early morning walk although I was exploring  sounds and other images 

I was not set on what the film would be . Taking a walk to the church early in the morning as the sun was shining around 8am with no one there allowed me to take it in with out any distrubance  . I knew the place was special  I walked round slowly . I felt very emotional and at peace .  I continued filming  taking the footage away this is film at its raw form natural speed
